When a shed or garage needs power

Extension leads across the lawn are not a plan. Armoured cable gives an outbuilding its own protected supply, with an isolator outside and proper fittings inside.

  • Working in the buildingLights overhead and sockets at bench height turn a shed into somewhere you can actually work, whatever the weather or the time of year.
  • Freezers, tools and chargersA garage that runs a freezer or charges tools needs a supply built for the load, not a lead threaded through a window.
  • Freestanding buildings done properlyArmoured cable is buried or clipped along a wall or fence, so the run survives mowers, spades and weather year after year.

What happens on the day

The job has three parts: getting the cable there safely, isolating it outside, and wiring the inside. Most runs are completed without fuss once the cable path is chosen.

  • Cable path chosenWe walk the garden with you and choose where the armoured cable will run: buried, clipped to a wall or along a fence line.
  • Outside isolator fittedWhere the cable reaches the building it meets a weatherproof isolator, so the outbuilding supply can be switched off from outside.
  • Inside wired upSockets, lights and any small consumer unit go in, then the whole run is tested before it is handed over.

Power to a shed or garage questions

Still have a question?

Is this the same as an outdoor socket?

No. An outdoor socket hangs off the house circuit at the wall. This is a dedicated run in armoured cable to the building itself, with its own isolation and fittings inside, built for regular use.

Does the cable have to be buried?

Usually it is buried at a sensible depth, but where a wall or fence gives a protected path the cable can be clipped instead. We choose which suits the garden on the survey.

Can the shed run a heater or a tumble dryer?

It can where the circuit and fittings are chosen for that load. Tell us what the building will run and the inside kit is specified around it, rather than hoping a light duty run copes.

What if the garage is attached to the house?

An attached garage is simpler, since the cable can often be taken through the wall. The isolator and inside fittings work the same way.

Will the trench wreck the garden?

The trench is narrow, taken along the line chosen with you, and the spoil goes back once the cable is in and marked. Turf and beds are put back as they were found, as far as the season allows.
